I’m excited to feature some designers who were showing at Haute Couture Week and more excited to say they are Lebanese!
Elie Saab, one of my all time favourite designers just showed his S/S10 Haute Couture at Paris Fashion Week, last week. Along with others such as Georges Chakra and Zuhair Murad. They have made a name for themselves by showing on the catwalks of New York and Paris to dressing the likes of Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, and Halle Berry for numerous Hollywood events. They are really taking the Couture scene by storm, and we are so proud!
Elie Saab has been doing it for years, and is probably the most recognised when it comes to Lebanese designers. With offices based in Beirut and Paris he is always on the go, and this year, yet again, he’s proved to us just how amazing his work really is.
The designer decided to go for the light pastel colours such as icy blues, peaches, pinks and mauves. Lace was also quite popular in this collection along with his trade mark beading work and embroidery. He used pale models and very light make-up, so the whole collection blended very well.
Zuhair Murad is another one of our favourite Lebanese designers, in 1995 he opened his first atelier in Beirut, and over night he established a very high reputation within the fashion scene.
His recent show went down extremely successful, and we really love his style!
Murad explains “Ever since I was a child, I used to imagine designs for imaginary clients. I have always loved to work in the world of luxury and design. As my country is well known for it’s natural beauty, that expertise, made me fall into the world of Haute Couture.”
His lavish creations for S/S10 are in sensational colours, extraordinary fabrics, and are reminiscent of Egyptian princesses and Grecian goddesses. And the thing we love about him the most is that he completes them with an edgy twist that modernises his collection, just enough. He too has dressed the likes of Shakira, Ivana Trump and Vanessa Williams.
Georges Chakra is a Beirut based Haute Couture fashion designer, he has presented his collections in Paris since 2001. It all started as a customized workshop for local and regional clientele. He is now dressing the likes of Rihanna, Tyra Banks and Helen Mirren. His designs were also showcased in the movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada’.
His most recent show at Paris Fashion Week made heads turn, and was described as “Treading the fine line between reality and fantasy, while staying true to the femininity of women.”
He used a variety of colours from subtle pinks and oranges to metallic blues and silvers, whilst using embroidered sequins and feathers. His collection oozes elegance and sophistication.
To all our Lebanese fashion designers, we salute you.
